The University of West Florida’s Center for Applied Psychology (CAP) is proud to host nationally-renowned expert Dr. Arthur Gutman. Dr. Gutman will talk about key Supreme Court and other important court decisions pertinent to today's work environment including the recent controversial Ricci vs DeStefano decision. This Ricci vs DeStefano case arose from a lawsuit brought against the city of New Haven, Connecticut by 18 city firefighters who claimed the city had discriminated against them in failing to certify a promotion test. Arthur Gutman, Professor of Psychology and past chair of the Industrial/Organizational program at Florida Tech, is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology and the American Evaluation Association. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Syracuse Univesrity in 1975 and spent 2 years at the University of Colorado as a National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral fellow and 2 years at Georgia State University. He has been at Florida Tech since 1979. He has consulted with public and private employers including the Center for Substance Prevention, the Florida Supreme Court, the US Army and Air Force, the Brevard County Police Testing Center, Harris Corporation and Holmes Regional Medical Center. His main teaching interests are Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) law, statistics, personnel selection, program evaluation and learning and memory. He is author of EEO Law and Personnel Practices (Sage, 2000, 2nd Ed) and originator of "On the Legal Front", a column on workplace discrimination that appears quarterly in the Industrial-Organizational Psychologist. He has developed employment tests for industry, consulted on at least a dozen adverse impact cases and has served as an expert witness in federal court.
