Students with Competence Problems: Assessment Methods, Resources and Considerations

Workshop Overview:
This workshop will focus on the evaluation of student learning outcomes with a focus on how the assessment of competence can be applied to those students who display competence problems. Key competency initiatives within psychology as well as across other health care professions will be described. This workshop also will address the challenges and best practices and methods in the assessment of competence. Available resources for defining and assessing competence and remediation with students experiencing competence problems will be highlighted. This workshop will take an applied focus and several vignettes will be presented to illustrate how the use of a competency-based approach to student learning can assist in the identification and remediation of students with competence problems.
Educational Objectives:
Based on this workshop participants will be able to:1. Describe factors that are relevant in the assessment of competence
2. Discuss a range of methods appropriate to assess competence in trainees
3. Formulate student learning outcomes using a competency approach
4. Prepare a remediation plan for students with competence problems
Instructor Bio:
Catherine L. Grus, Ph.D. has served as Associate Executive Director for Professional Education and Training at the American Psychological Association since November 2005. Dr. Grus received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Nova University in 1993. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Miami, School of Medicine and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her role at APA Dr Grus works to advance policies and practices that promote high quality education and training in professional psychology, including continuing professional education programs. An area of considerable focus for Dr. Grus at present is the development of models and resources related to measuring professional psychology education and training program outcomes through the competencies acquired by trainees. Dr. Grus works actively with APA governance groups to advance policies that promote quality education and training as well as serving as a liaison to national, international, and inter-organizational education and training councils. Prior to taking joining the staff at APA Dr. Grus was a member of the faculty at the University of Miami School of Medicine for ten years. Her clinical work has focused on the provision of services to children and families of children with chronic illnesses. Her scholarly work has been in the area of psychosocial functioning and adherence to health care regimens in children with chronic illness. Dr. Grus served as director of psychology internship training at the same institution for eight years and was active in the internship and postdoctoral residency training community at a national level in various roles.
