Textbooks
Buying your own textbooks may be new to you or something you haven’t done in a while. To help you get up to speed, here are 5 things you need to know:
Textbooks are not just books these days. They may be book and software packages or collections of materials customized by your instructor especially for your class. The one thing your course materials have in common is that your instructor selected them with your academic success in mind.
The value of your textbooks. Textbooks, unlike most other books, require an enormous investment to research and develop, and their market may be limited. Price, like course requirements, can vary greatly. Remember, textbooks are an investment in your future success. To get the most value from your investment, use your books. To get the best price, buy used copies and sell them back at the end of the semester. Some books will be available on a rental basis.
Rent your books. When you rent books, you’ll pay on average less than half the new book price. Just look for the “For Rent” sign beside your book. Don’t forget to return your rental books before the end of the term. Textbook rental is the most economical way to obtain your textbooks. For more information, go to www.rent-a-text.com.
Used books save you money on both ends. When you buy used books, you save 25% over the new book price. When you sell that book back at the end of the term, you can get up to 50% of your investment back. However you look at it, used books are a good deal.
Buy your books early. Demand for used books generally exceeds supply; for that reason, it’s a good idea to buy your textbooks as soon as possible.
BookNow
The UWF Bookstore offers a BookNow program which connects UWF’s online registration system to the UWF Bookstore, allowing students to purchase or rent textbooks online immediately after registering for classes. The system transfers you directly with the bookstore’s system and provides a pre-populated list of required and recommended course materials based on your individual class schedule. You will see the book selections for your classes and
can decide which books to purchase or rent. Orders may be picked up at the bookstore or shipped. BookNow provides students with an easy to use, all-in-one solution and less time spent in bookstore lines.
Bookstore Deferment Program
What is it?
If you are receiving financial aid, the Bookstore Deferment Program will allow you to purchase your textbooks before your aid is disbursed. Deferment is not an additional award but an estimated amount based on your financial aid award less unpaid charges on your account. The maximum deferment amount is $600.00. You will receive notification, usually by email, from the UWF Financial Services department if you have excess financial aid funds that may be used. The student must be enrolled for the minimum number of hours required for your financial aid award.
How does the student use the deferment?
By signing the bookstore receipt, you authorize UWF to deduct the Bookstore charges from your financial aid and/or scholarship award. (If the student’s financial aid status changes, the student is responsible for purchases made under this program.)
