Cole graduated with a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota. He did fieldwork for the University of Texas Tech, working on Paleo-Indian habitation sites, before moving to Florida to work for the Seminole Tribe of Florida's Tribal Historic Preservation Office, where he did fieldwork on both prehistoric and historic campsites on the tree-island hammocks in and around the Everglades.
Cole's research interests include Creek and Seminole ethnohistory and archaeology, experimental archaeology, British colonial history, and Geographic Information Systems.
