Chapter History

lillie James Frazier, member of the local graduate chapter, Delta Iota Omega, inspired the establishment of Beta Gamma Chapter with the assistance of Dr. Amy Cato, a professor at the University. Dr. Cato was not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., however, she was later initiated into the graduate chapter. Dr. Cato was instrumental with helping Lillie Frazier by connecting her to the appropriate university personnel, including the Director of Student Activities, Jim Hurd, with establishing permission for the chapter to become a recognized organization on the campus.

Lillie Frazier was successful with getting Homie Regulus, the South Atlantic Regional Director, to come to the University about four times to meet with several interested women. The reasons for the excessive number of meetings was that all of the young ladies were not available at the same time, they were home on vacation, and it was very difficult for all women to collectively meet because of their different geographical locations. But, because of the persistence of Lillie Frazier, Beta Gamma was finally established.

On June 22, 1974, Beta Gamma Chapter was chartered and twelve students of the University were the first initiates, and they are follows: Ernestine Brown, Paula Goldsmith, Carrie Henderson, Vivian Jackson, Linda Lee, Eura Long, Nettie Manning, Senthia Matan, Judy Pierce, Mary Potter, Belinda Tomlin, and Vivian Johnson.

Despite the fact that the populous of the University is majority white, for a number of years Alpha Kappa Alpha was the only surviving sorority of the Pan-Hellenic Council on UWF's campus. Mary Shy Scott, the First Supreme Ant-Basileus from 1980-1984, was very supportive of Beta Gamma by letting the charter remain though the membership had decreased drastically.

Throughout the years, there have been many Graduate Advisors who have also endured Beta Gamma's continuance history at UWF they include Cheryl Howard, Mamie Hixon, Carla Jones, A.J. Lawrence, Angela McCorvey, Cheryl Powell, and Kimberly Wheeler.

As the needs and direction of society change Beta Gamma stands firm and dedicated, exploring and implementing programs that emphasize our commitment, "to be of service to all mankind.
