lpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first black greek letter sorority, was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 15, 1908. The sorority was incorporated in 1913.

ounded by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, the sorority grew from 16 young women to more than 150,000 women around the globe. We have more than 882 undergraduate and graduate chapters in fifty states, West Africa, Bahamas, Bermuda, England, Korea, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and West Germany.

ontinuous service to all people has been Alpha Kappa Alpha's legacy during the 20th century. We vow to continue that commitment in this century. The sorority has established herself as a dynamic group whose services initiate new movements and programs. She serves as a training ground for women who will assume increasingly greater responsibilities in leadership in their expanding communities. Alpha Kappa Alpha women volunteer their skills and resources through networking with organizations that demonstrate shared interests.
