Counting Four (4) Units in Mathematics
With the state of Florida changing the math units to be a required 4 for admission into State University System (SUS) institutions, many high school counselors have wondered how we calculate the 4 years of math. At UWF, we believe the intention of the change to 4 units of math was encourage students to accomplish at least 1 more math course beyond Algebra 2. However, the math requirement was written to be 4 units of math starting with Algebra 1. It sounds the same, but the two options are drastically different. To accommodate those students in transition, the SUS published the following guidelines for all SUS campuses to follow using the effective dates listed. This information was published by the Board of Governors and presented to school counselors at the 2010 Directors Tour Workshops held across the state. Please pay attention to the specific dates of involvement as the aggregate content can be confusing. The following are restatements of those announcements:
2010-2011 12th Graders:
These students are permitted to count the sequence of Algebra 1A and 1B or the sequence of Applied Math I and II as two credits for high school graduation as well as for meeting SUS admission requirements. These students are permitted to count Liberal Arts Math as one of the four required credits of Algebra I or higher for admission to a state university as long as Liberal Arts Math was taken 2007-08, 2008-09, or 2009-2010. If the course is taken during the 2010-2011 academic year or later, it will not count as one of the four credits for SUS admission.

2010-2011 10th Graders and all students who enroll after that term:
High school math credits for these students will revert to the traditional SUS policy, which states the sequence of Algebra1A and 1B or the sequence of Applied Math I and II will each satisfy a total of one credit of math for SUS admission purposes. Liberat Arts Math will not be accepted as one of the four mathematics core courses for these students.
A Competitive Admissions Note: Students should be aware that their course selection affects possible admission to UWF. Students who have selected Liberal Arts Math, Algebra 1A & 1B, or Applied Math I & II may not be as competitive in the admissions process as those who select course work continuing beyond the Algebra II level.
