Committee Responsibilities

The Chair appoints all chairs of the bylaw and ad hoc standing committees (see Officers' Duties). Although some committee chairs and officers are by default members of certain committees, the chair of any committee may appoint additional members. In disseminating news to the Section's membership or the public the roles of the Secretary and chairs of the Webmaster and Newsletter committees are important.

Central to the memberships' knowledge of local events is the information gained from our monthly mailings by our Secretary, quarterly mailings from the Newsletter editor, and the Word Wide Web postings by our Web master chair. Although the above cartoon illustrates the source of information --for example, in this case, the chair-elect who is also the Program chair of the Section, any officer or chair should avail these avenues for keeping the Section informed.

IN THE EVENT OF A VACANCY, the Executive Committee, by default, has the responsibility in carrying out the duties.

Bylaw

HOSPITALITY:
This committee is responsible for preparing the name badges for the Section's meetings, introduces new members and acts as host for guests of the section. All elected and appointed officers are members of this committee.

MEMBERSHIP:
The purpose of this committee is to facilitate national, affiliate, and student affiliate members into local section's activities.   The membership list --  which is maintained by, and may be obtained from,  the secretary -- is not a public document.

PROGRAM:
This committee arranges the section meetings, securing speakers and restaurants and acting as host for the speakers. The Chair-Elect heads this committee, and the Secretary, publicity chair and newsletter chair coordinate with this committee in keeping the members and the public informed of the meeting arrangements. Generally, there is no program for summer.

PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVE (PUBLICITY):
This committee informs the media (Pensacola News-Journal, Gulf Breeze paper, C & E News, etc.) and the public about our Section's activities. The Secretary and chairs of the program, web master, and newsletter committees must coordinate their efforts with the publicity chair to ensure that information is distributed in a timely fashion.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
This committee works to enhance the professional status of the membership and provides continuing education opportunities.

Ad Hoc

EDUCATION:
The purpose of this committee is to organize the Chemathon  and ChemOlympiad competitions in local area high schools and the awards banquet for the winners. This banquet is traditionally held as the May meeting. This committee, interacting closely with the Teachers' Representative(s) and the sub-chairs,  also promote interest in chemistry education in our area.  In 2005, Teacher representatives for both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were added to the Executive committee.

ELECTIONS:
This committee recruits candidates for the annual election. No elected officer may serve on the election committee. Appointed by the Chair in September, the immediate past Chair normally serves as head of the committee.  In October nominations from the floor are solicited, ballots sent shortly thereafter, and results announced in November

NEWSLETTER:
This committee prepares and publishes the quarterly section newsletter. The purpose is to inform members of the activities of the Section on matters of interest at the regional and national levels. The Secretary and chairs of the publicity and web master committees are standing members of this committee.

This committee organizes the Section's National Chemistry Week activities. National Chemistry Week which begins on the last Sunday in October each year.

SYMPOSIUM:
This committee, headed by the Chair, organizes symposia which with consultation of the Executive Committee may be of interest to the Section.

WOMEN CHEMIST: Initiated by the Section in 2003, this Committee promotes the interests of  women in our Section.  Except in governance, there is no gender discrimination for members wishing to serve on this committee.
