STARC, or Students Taking Adventures in Recreation in the Community, is a summer program for youth in the Northwest-Florida area. This program offers your child an opportunity to get out and be active during the summer months while participating in various group activities!
The professional staff for the STARC program consists primarily of UWF undergraduate and graduate students with proficiency in Physical Education, Exercise Science and Community Health Education as well as UWF staff. These individuals have a strong background in athletics and education which help to ensure the safety of those in attendance and provides for a wider range of quality resources.
From 8:00-11:30 am the participants are divided into age-appropriate groups so they can take part in planned and organized break-out sessions in areas such as sports, games, or crafts.
For those that attend the full day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, a lunch, included as part of the registration fee, is provided and supervised by the camp staff.
From 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm, we change gears and focus on one main activity for the afternoon. This allows us to maximize the amount of participation by our students so they can get the most out of their experience. As our registration grows, participants may have a choice of multiple activities of which to attend.
Some of these activities include canoeing and kayaking starting on the UWF campus, using our indoor rock wall measuring 36 feet high, swimming in our indoor pool, exploring the numerous trails that run through our 1600 acre nature preserve, as well as going go-karting, mini-golfing and skating!
We also offer a great opportunity for high school upperclassmen to earn community service hours for Bright Futures or other non-disciplinary purposes! We are currently taking applications for volunteers to serve as squad leaders. Squad leaders are responsible for a small group of participants. They work directly with the program staff to get groups of students to each activity, facilitating some activities and assisting in keeping everyone together when we travel on and off campus.
A key value of the STARC program is to give back to the community. In that respect, we will be offering FREE movies OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! On advertised Fridays, we will be showing movies in air-conditioned comfort in the University Commons Auditorium. All movies are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! Donations are always appreciated. To get details on our advertised movies, check out the Free Friday Night Movies link!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
