UWF Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration 2012
“For Every Day and For Everyone: Applying Dr. King’s Dream Today”
The University of West Florida (UWF) invites the public to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy. Join us Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the UWF Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Mainstage Theatre, Building 82. This event will promote and showcase diversity amongst people who are endeavoring to live his dream. This event is free and open to the public; however, due to limited seating you must have a ticket. Contact Alesia Ross aross@uwf.edu or 850.474.2423 for ticket availability.
The event will feature acclaimed poet and spoken word artist Shelton “Shakespear” Alexander as well as a variety of cultural performances including the An Broc Irish Dancers, Okinawa Japanese Drummers, Sidona Belly Dancers, and Belmont Youth Band, to name a few. A panel of politically and socially active community members will lead the audience in a discussion about current efforts to apply Dr. King’s dream to our lives today.
Sponsored by the UWF Black Employee Association (BEA) with support from the UWF Pace Symposium Series, this event is a part of the Pensacola Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration Commission (M.L.K.C.C.C.). Please join us as we come together to discuss how we all can continue to apply Dr. King’s dream at UWF and in the greater Northwest Florida community. Dr. King’s dream was not to be owned or controlled by one group. It was and is to have the brotherhood of humankind come together to uplift all people.
As can only be said by Dr. King in his “I Have a Dream” speech...
...When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the evening.
