J.T. Young
UWF degree and year of graduation:
Master of Business Administration 1993
Why did you choose to attend UWF?
I had an engineering degree from the University of Florida and was working for Gulf Power in the marketing department. I wanted to broaden my business understanding and knowledge. UWF had a great reputation for their master’s program and I knew it would be a challenging program.
What were your goals as a student?
My main goal was to finish the program. However, I mostly wanted to expand my business knowledge and knew that in order to be more marketable professionally, I needed to have a stronger business background.
What is your best memory from your days at UWF?
My Operations Management course because it was the most challenging. Dr. Lew Cox really put us to the test and I have a vivid memory of our presentations in class. He always challenged our skills as students. There were also very lively conversations about current events during class. Also, I remember the team building exercises through class which taught me about the different leadership styles and what was more effective in the real world.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
Dr. Lew Cox as I mentioned before because of the operations management course. Also Roy Smith was a favorite because of his background with Exxon Mobile and the practical experiences that brought to the classroom.
What do you do now?
I am the Regional Chief Information Officer for Gulf Power. I oversee the technology and business side of IT.
How did UWF help you progress to this point?
It assisted me with the leadership roles that I’ve had with Gulf Power and Southern Company and made me more effective in terms of working with teams. It also expanded my business acumen and gave me a better appreciation for the value of numerous financial measurements and statement. The diversity of students in the MBA was great because I was able to intersect with a cross-section of people from military to business. The high expectations of the program also helped me to develop my focus skills.
Outside of working, what activities and organizations are you currently involved in and what are your hobbies?
I play a lot of golf with my sons and our family is very involved in our church. I also serve on the UWF Trustees, Baptist Health Care, Lakeview and Fellowship of Christian Athletes boards of directors. I was recently appointed to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the First Judicial District.
How do you stay connected to UWF?
Mainly through fellow UWF alumni who work at Gulf Power, where we have hosted several alumni workplace events.
What advice do you have to current and future UWF students?
Take advantage of opportunities. Students should count themselves fortunate to be a part of UWF and cherish the moments they have to network with other students and alumni that will last them a lifetime. Build a future through these networks.
What quality makes UWF special or unique?
UWF is a personable university with a character of its own and can serve its students well. Its potential is yet untapped.
