Jim Buchili
UWF degree and year of graduation:
Masters Aerospace Systems 1975
Why did you choose to attend UWF?
UWF had the masteres level aero program which met all the criteria for me to apply and be accepted in the US Marine Corps Masters Degree Program. Additionally, as a Marine aviator stationed in the Far East, UWF gave me the perfect location to rejoin my family from a remote tour of duty. The course work also was an exact fit to what I wanted to enhance my career opportunities.
What were your goals as a student?
I wanted to do well in the academic environment. I had been away from college for some time, and desired to excel at the masters level. UWF gave me the environment I wanted-both academically and personally as well as the opportunity to further my engineering and systems knowledge. At the time I was unaware of the advantages that an advanced degree truly gave medoors were opened in later life which would not have been without UWF.
What is your best memory from your days at UWF?
The satisfaction of doing well in a technical study field, and the opportunity to participate with like minded students. The school environment was an expansion of my experiences that complimented my military background. The professors, as I recall, were all motivated to see us excel and were very encouraging to all.
What do you do now?
I am an aerospace executive involved in the design of hardware and the management of large programs for NASA’s human spaceflight programs. I am working in industry at this point, but have worked for NASA as a Space Shuttle Astronaut (1978-1992).
How did UWF help you progress to this point?
The education provided a platform through which I was able to attend Navy Test Pilot School and then apply for and be selected as a NASA Astronaut.
Outside of working, what activities and organizations are you currently involved in and what are your hobbies?
Working in the space business is a very large demand on time and effort. When I do have time I’m an avid fishing enthusiast and enjoy wood carvingwaterfowl decoys. My wife of 37 years, Jean, and I enjoy travel. We are looking forward to building a home in the Pensacola area and returning after being away for many years.
What advice do you have to current and future UWF students?
Get all and the best education you can. You are never too old to go back to school and higher education provides a foundation for one to be a better human being , tolerant of others and exposed to numerous different cultures and points of view. For those just starting college, remember that your education is what sets you apart from others. Make the best of it.
What quality makes UWF special or unique?
A smaller university which treats students as individuals and as members of the UWF family.
